If the truth be told, no-one wants to look old so it is not surprising that one of the largest markets in the world of health and beauty is anti-ageing skin care products. Twenty-five per cent of the skins protein is collagen. Collagen is related to other anti-ageing substances in the body called anti-oxidants.

Vitamin C is probably one of the better known anti-oxidants in use today but the debate about the daily quota required is ongoing. Skin care treatments that are based on vitamin C, pose the problem of becoming oxidized themselves as they come into contact with air during their usage.

To overcome this problem, manufacturers use alternative skin care treatments that still provide the same benefits but not the high manufacturing costs. However, these anti-ageing skin care treatments are not as effective vitamin C based products, although vitamin E and lipoic acid are also anti-oxidants and have similar effects.

Vitamin E is an anti-oxidant and component of human blood whose purpose is to help increase the bodys immune system against diseases including cancer. It is known to combat the signs of ageing very effectively by reversing skin damage caused by the ageing process.

The use of plants has not been overlooked either with many types able to provide essences called phytochemicals which have proved successful in anti-ageing skin care products. Like lipoic acid, phytochemicals help reduce the occurrence of cancers such as prostate, breast and colon cancers.

Some B-vitamins like B5, B6 and B12 are also in use for anti-ageing skin care products. The field of anti-ageing skin care products is vast and needs a great deal more research.

A great deal about the ageing process has already been learned and the products available today are already far more advanced than ten years ago but there is still a long way to go. There may be many challenges still to overcome but in time scientists believe they will succeed in producing more effective anti-ageing skin care products that are less expensive and available to more people.

However, man-made skin care regimes should be used only as a supplement. You know all these things but how many do you practice? Regular exercise, restful sleep, drinking plenty of water, eating a healthy diet and keeping your stress levels low.
